Abidjan is West Africa’s queer melting pot. However, a broad section of society still doesn’t accept LGBTQ+ individuals. Violence and assaults occur frequently, especially against transgender.
Without the right to be different, Africa is going nowhere. But the full picture is missing. Djikalou likes to activate change and is passionate about storytelling and inclusion.
Same-sex sexual activity is legal for both men and women in Ivory Coast, but same-sex couples and households headed by same-sex couples are not eligible for the same legal protections available to opposite-sex couples.

On May 29, , Le Monde reported the story of a young Guinean LGBTQ+ citizen who sought refuge in Abidjan (the economic capital of Côte d’Ivoire) after the ordeals he suffered in Guinea.

During the year the Force Republiques de Côte d'Ivoire (FRCI) reportedly beat and abused gay men and transgender persons, most of them sex workers. Complaints were not filed for fear of reprisals. The situation of the LGBT community reportedly improved after the postelectoral crisis but remained precarious.
